Mahabodhi Temple Bodhgaya, Bodhgaya, Bihar, India
The famous and sacred Maha Bodhi temple, or the "Great Awakening Temple," in Bodhgaya, Bihar, is reputed to be the place where Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha attained enlightenment. It is also known as Mahabodhi Mahavira or The Great Stupa.
Bodhgaya is also known as the Buddhist "capital" of the world, and is an important destination for pilgrims who come from distant locations to visit the the sacred Mahabodhi temple (recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002). Pilgrims also visit the hallowed site of Gautama Buddha's enlightenment and to worship at the holy Bodhi tree which is loacted inside the temple compound.
Buddhists believe that this stupa lies at the center of their spiritual universe. Inside, a golden statue of Lord Buddha captures his exact posture at the moment of Supreme Enlightement.
